There are many great things that come with the leaves turning but perhaps my favorite is the return of Oktoberfest beers. A beer that is rich in malt that balances hop bitterness and finishes cleanly.
The malts are medium and the hops are noble – the beer is perfect for any festival.
We are lucky in Colorado, there are so many great options, from the traditional to the imperial.
First up – Imperial Oktoberfest Beers:
Boulder Beer: Dragonhosen
It is traditional but is sweeter than you might expect, the caramel malt shines through.
Overall Beer Rating: 9 spades out of 10
Avery: The Kaiser
Malty, Toasty, and a bit heavier showing its imperial status.
Overall Beer Rating: 10 spades out of 10
Next up – Traditional Oktoberfest Beers:
Left Hand: Marzen Lager
Traditional in its base but more bold in spice with its hops
Overall Beer Rating: 8 spades out of 10
Prost: Marzen
Malty with an immensely clean finish
Overall Beer Rating: 8 spades out of 10
Great Divide: Hoss
Malt forward with an interesting hint of dark fruit
Overall Beer Rating: 8 spades out of 10
Fort Collins Brewery: Oktoberfest
2015 GABF winner – the hint of spice and herbs are delicate in their nature, I lean towards the robust.
Overall Beer Rating: 8 spades out of 10
Dry Dock: Docktoberfest
In my opinion, I saved the best for last. Everything you want in your Oktoberfest beer, malty, sweet and spicy – bold flavors.
As the beer says “Noch ein Bier, bitte – Another beer, please”
Overall Beer Rating: 10 spades out of 10
Find the Oktoberfest that suits you best and let us know why, Prost!
